1909 Russia in living color: The photos of Sergey Prokudin-Gorskii

A couple poses for a portrait on the north slope of the Caucasus Mountains in what is today the Dagestan Republic of the Russian Federation.

Pinkhus Karlinskii stands by a ferry dock along the Mariinskii Canal system in the northern part of European Russia. In 1909 Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorskii set out on a specially designed railroad car to document the diverse Russian Empire in color photographs. Prokudin-Gorskii's effort was backed by Tsar Nicholas II, giving him access and cooperation across the sweeping empire. Prokudin-Gorskii went on to photograph the people, cities and landscapes of Russia on the eve of WWI and revolution from 1909 to 1915.
