1245775898087Pinkhus Karlinskii stands by a ferry dock along the Mariinskii Canal system in the northern part of European Russia.In 1909 Russian photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorskii set out on a specially designed railroad car to document the diverse Russian Empire in color photographs. Prokudin-Gorskii's effort was backed by Tsar Nicholas II, giving him access and cooperation across the sweeping empire. Prokudin-Gorskii went on to photograph the people, cities and landscapes of Russia on the eve of WWI and revolution from 1909 to 1915.
