Renting the Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens August 21 2009
Canon 17-40mm f/4LI just received a Canon 17-40mm f/4L from LensRentals.com. This is my first experience renting a camera lense, but considering the cost of purchasing the 17-40 I though I would give this a shot. So far the process has worked well. The lense arrived undamaged on the date promised via FedEx and appears to be in good shape. The cost of the rental for 14 days is $84, including shipping.
I rented the lense because I'm heading into Walker Evans territory this weekend and wanted a good wide-angle zoom to get photos of rural Alabama. Searching on Google it looks like there are a few outfits that will rent a lense. While LensRentals wasn't the cheapest, I have heard good things about them and enjoyed the often humurous and honest reviews of some of the lenses. Here is what they say about the Canon TS-E 24mm tilt-shift lense:
If you aren’t sure what this is, you don’t want it.
For those who do, this is a wide angle tilt and shift manual focus lens in the Canon line up. It enables tilt and shift movements to correct distortion and allow manipulation of depth of field. Used for architecture, landscapes and other wide-angle shots. It takes practice to use the tilt-shift functions effectively. How much practice? I don’t know, just more than I’ve had.
