This reproduction of a hand-colored etching depicts Jacques Alexandre Csar Charles departing Nesle, France on December 1, 1783. Charles had landed in Nesle after completing, from Paris, the first hydrogen balloon flight. On the ground at left is Marie-Nel Robert, who accompanied Charles on the flight, taking the statements of witnesses. Etching, c. 1783.
