This 1918 WWI poster by popular contemporary artist Nell Brinkley shows a shower of beautiful girls raining down around Uncle Sam to offer their services to work in Washington. On the right side Brinkley has illustrated the problems female war workers faced in the city: One sleeps in a chair, one sleeps on a lamp post and one reads a sign that says: 'Apartments, No Dogs, Children or Girls.' Brinkley's popular drawings featured cute girls with masses of curly hair. She was one of the most widely published illustrators at the turn of the century and she frequently focused on the problems confronting working women.
